Hello You Origami Seeking Risk-Taker, thank you for dropping in, you are in search of true and unusual travel tips and this is the right channel.
Everything I am talking about you can find somewhere else but you get my take on it and quirky itineraries from a loving Japanese / German mind with a a fascination for hot baths. Once in a while we do explore Eurasia and the Land of the free.
I lived in Aotearoa, the Lion City, the City of Gold and currently in the land of the rising sun.

Schibuya Jazz & Blues Clubs Tokyo Japan | along the Yamanote line
Hello Traveller to Japan
Tokyo’s maze of public transport is difficult to navigate. My advice is to look at the poison green line of Yamanote. It covers major tourist attractions and you do not need a wifi to check where you are going. If you use an App, I recommend the “Japan Travel App” but Google is fine as well.
The Yamanote line circle is going clockwise and anti-clockwise through Tokyo. It is easy to remember this line and to get around. I review every station on this line. Today’s Station review is Shibuya and recommend Blues and Jazz bars for evening entertainment.
Shibuya is home to several notable jazz and blues bars where music lovers can enjoy live performances, listen to vinyl records, or just soak in the atmosphere. Here are some prominent jazz and blues spots in Shibuya:
### Jazz Bars:
1. **Jazz Bar Pres**:
- **Location**: Up Dogenzaka Street, near Shibuya Station
- **Details**: Known for its intimate atmosphere, Pres Jazz Bar features murals of jazz legends on the walls. It's a small venue where you can enjoy both live jazz and vinyl records. The owner, Iwasaki-san, has curated an experience centered around appreciating jazz music.
2. **JBS (Jazz, Blues, Soul)**:
- **Location**: 1-17-10 Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku
- **Details**: Owned by Kobayashi-san, JBS is famous for its vast collection of over 10,000 vinyl records. It's more of a listening room where music takes center stage, with drinks being secondary. The bar specializes in jazz, blues, and soul, with some hip-hop selections, offering a unique experience for music enthusiasts.
3. **Blue Note Tokyo**:
- **Location**: Though technically in Aoyama, it's close enough to Shibuya to be considered part of its cultural landscape.
- **Details**: This renowned jazz club attracts top international and Japanese jazz artists. While it's more of a concert venue than a bar, the intimate setting, excellent acoustics, and high-end service make it a must-visit for jazz aficionados.
4. **The Bellwood**:
- **Location**: Not in central Shibuya but near Kamiyamacho, a short walk from Shibuya Station.
- **Details**: This bar offers a luxurious setting with a focus on cocktails, but it also hosts jazz nights, providing a chic environment for jazz listening.
5. **The Room**:
- Though more eclectic in its music selection, The Room is known for its funky/groovy music nights which include jazz and blues influences. It's a place where you can dance to live music without pretense.
6. **Shibuya Swing**:
- More of a cafe during the day, this spot becomes a place where you can enjoy jazz in a relaxed setting. It's known for its coffee and cozy atmosphere, providing a contrast to the bustling streets of Shibuya
7. **Seabird**:
- This old-school cafe between Shibuya and Omotesando stations offers jazz in a traditional setting. It's not specifically a blues club, but its dedication to jazz culture makes it noteworthy.
8. **Blues Alley Japan**:
- While not directly in Shibuya, it's close enough to mention. It's one of the more sophisticated venues with live music, offering an eclectic mix that includes blues.
9. **Body and Soul Club** in Shibuya is a renowned jazz venue in Tokyo, Japan, known for its intimate atmosphere and high-quality live music performances. Here are some key points about this club:
10. **Club Camelot**:
- **Location**: Near Shibuya Station
- **Details**: While primarily an EDM club, Camelot sometimes hosts blues nights or events with a blues theme, especially in their lounge area. It's not a dedicated blues bar but offers variety in Shibuya's nightlife scene.
11. **Naru**
Naru Bar Yoyogi, often referred to as just "Naru," is a well-known jazz club located in the Yoyogi neighborhood of Tokyo:
- Naru is described as a cozy, intimate jazz club with a family-like atmosphere. The venue is in the basement with a small sign indicating its presence, giving it an unassuming but welcoming vibe.
- - The club is celebrated for hosting high-quality jazz musicians, both from Japan and abroad. It's known for its live music events, often featuring two or three sets a night, starting around 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM.

The price has gone up so much from where we first came to Japan in 2016. ....thanks for postig this Martina.
True, very expensive and best to plan well, maybe it is cheaper to just buy normal tickets.
Thank you for the interesting itinerary.
A friend of mine would like to attend the Tanabata festival in Kyoto this year. She is from Germany. I've checked the website and it seems as though only people living in Japan with a Japanese address can buy tickets online. Do you know if it's possible to buy a ticket as a tourist? I would appreciate any thoughts :)
please get in touch with martinemler @ gmail . com
@@MartinaTakano Thank you, I appreciate it! My friend managed to find a way to get the tickets. Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland :)
@@noddycool2703 hey I'm also trying to get the tickets, how did your friend get it without a Japanese address?
@@jeanszz28 I'm not exactly sure. Maybe she used the address of her stay. I briefly talked to her and she mentioned that apparently she was able to get the tickets from the website when she checked it a bit later as if something had changed on the website.
very good thinking on the 20 year contract. i just bought a house in osaka that has an expired 10 year contract and i'm trying to find electric companies that will buy my excess which is not an easy process for me since i don't read japanese. But even if i find a company that will buy it, they will probably only offer a few yen per kwh
How much kw do you have on your house? it depends on that.
Buy batteries, then store it in reserve?

Where's this Martina ?

Martina, I still get confused finding my way at the stations and roads in Japan. It's a nightmare sometimes.
True, I see it with my husband as well, he uses the public transport every weekday but same stations he gets confused or other times he is surprised over new connections. 🚃
We're back in Japan (Yokohama) in November. My favourite month. Just before the cold really hits and the Christmas lights start going up. Nice informative upload. Thanks for sharing Martina.
November is a good month, usually blue skies and autumn colours.
Wonderful video!! It seems the Ghibli Clock is a hidden gem, I'll make sure to find it in my visit to Tokyo. I very much enjoy your detailed explanations.
Thank you
Wow...thanks for posting. I know someone in Okinawa😢

@@MartinaTakano as you know our son lives near Yokohama. I hope you will all stay safe
Quickly looking at the graphs on that LCD display (BTW, are sure that doesn't have English in the settings menu?) you can see that your PV panel grid size is slightly undersized, especially seeing that you're short on August power generation. Also, your payback on your system is never going to really pay back because the feed in rate is BELOW the charged rate per kWh. To be fair to everyone, the meter should just spin backwards on a 1:1 ratio so there's no silly formulas needed for time of day rates, etc. Another big issue if you don't already have a battery bank to charge with your excess power generation is you're really giving up the best part of a solar power system, emergency backup power for when the inevitable crap hits the fan which in Japan is more often than not.
No English, somehow Nov Dec are good month and two years in the row August wasn’t’t that great. We charge our car, the battery can feed back to the house. We had 3 days power outage in 8 years but I agree, a fixed battery would be great. Money money money is needed 😃 The rates are changing regularly and charging at night (car) is no longer cheaper.
@@MartinaTakano That's why I have always advocated to the power companies to just K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Senpai) and go with the 1:1 ratio on net metering (feed in tariff). What you make (kWh) is what you have in credit (kWh). This removes all the fancy charts for time of day use, holiday (low business demand), phase of the moon (for crazy people trying to contact far away places), etc., etc., etc.
If you are in the position to negotiate, we are not
@@MartinaTakano It's the power of the people. It's already been happening in Japan especially since 3/11. Some small towns have 'pulled the plug' on the grid after they didn't get the deal that would have been fair and reliable. The more people that pull the plug on the 'Tepcos' of Japan and the rest of the world, the more these companies will have to work to deal with their loss for being lazy, corrupt and/or greedy. Wallets speak louder than protests. 😉
3:13 was there a hidden message in showing that pack rat's property? 😆
Another topic 🤣 I guess
@@MartinaTakano I believe we all have one of those properties in our neighbours. 😔
It would be really helpful if you displayed all the names of the products , on the screen. Nice vedio ❤

Hello Martina! Thank you for the very informative video. We're going to Japan on Jun 23-30 2023. We're planning on visiting a few places, Kyoto, Fuji, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Akihabara, Tokyo and Yokohama. Does it really heavily rain everyday to the point wherein it's better to stay indoors?
Japan is spread over 3000 km and rainy season is different from region to region and it is still very hot in Japan, even with rain. Cherry blossom arrives early this year, so maybe the rainy season is not on time, difficult to say. When it rains, it rains a lot, not as bad as Monsum but close. Prepare for some indoor activity, hotels have umbrellas for you, waterproof shoes, it will be fine.
How did it go with the rain? We're going to Japan exactly the same week this year... Thank you!
